Darling, What Exactly Does Sunshine Smell Like?

Have you ever had an experience where you smelled something and then...BAM!...memory returned?  Perhaps, you smelled something and you immediately thought of someone or an experience you had.  As one of the owners of West Coast Shaving, and someone who has spoken with many of our customers, I hear this all the time.  And by the way, I love, love, love to smell things!  Prior to starting the business with John I was a Clinical Social Worker in Mental Health and heard plenty about this REAL connection.  This is no joke.  There is a physiological connection in the brain that is very strong between the sense of smell and memory.  I'm not planning to bore you with all the detail there...after all this is a shaving blog!

I have a soap that reminds me so much of my beloved Grandmother and each time a use it, I think of her with fondness.  The other day, John had to laugh at me because I bought a clothesline to hang the bedsheets.  He laughed at me because we do have a dryer.  But for me, there is nothing like the smell of sunshine on bedsheets.  I remember as a kid running in the clothesline between the sheets and smelling the sheets and laying in bed with the same joy.  I can not tell you how much I loved to see our 5-year-old doing what must be an innate action of running through the bedsheets just this Sunday.  I never told her to do it or told her I did it as a child.  I asked her as she lay in her clean bed how it smells..."Mama, it smells like sunshine!"  Those are memories worth making.

Next time you splash on a new aftershave, ask yourself why you wear it.  Does it remind you of someone who had an impact on you?  For me, it happens over and over again.  And maybe someday your kids or grand-kids will have the same memories of  you when they splash on their first bit of aftershave or cologne.  Please feel free to share in the comments if you have any stories of scent and memories!
