I've never used an "open comb" safety razor.....what do I need to know about this machine to get the best shave?

You do not want to apply pressure. Let the weight of the razor do the work for you and take your time. Do not rush using an open comb razor.

How best to take care of the razor for optimum performance?

The only thing you need to do it clean the razor. I would recommend using an old toothbrush and hot water to scrub the razor and get the soap scum off. You could use soap hot water as well. But I find an occasional cleaning with a brush will do the trick.
