D.R. Harris: How to Groom Like Royalty

D.R. Harris Sandalwood at WCSIt's the happily-ever-after story of the grooming world: A humble apothecary shop in London toils tirelessly for the good of the people, then rises through the ranks to become the trusted chemist of the royal family. Just your old-fashioned rags-to-royalty story, set against the backdrop of Saint James Street in London, where D.R. Harris has been quietly mixing the lotions and potions of the distinguished British citizenry since 1790.

Why we're featuring it:

D.R. Harris wasn't just one of the first on the map in the world of personal care products; they were also one of the first brands West Coast Shaving carried, and we're proud to stand by that decision. Despite their centuries of tradition, this is not a brand that's been content to stagnate. Recently, they've expanded their line into two new scents, sandalwood and eucalyptus, which we're excited to feature as we think they represent a fresh spin on this steadfast company's appeal.

Why we like it:

Look, you tell generations of the British monarchy that they're wrong. We dare you. D.R. Harris has been honored with the warrants as official chemists to two queens and the Prince of Wales, making them a continuous supplier to Buckingham Palace since 1938. In other words, every tea time, cricket match, polo championship, and stiff upper lip royal-watchers have obsessed over since the mid 20th century has been groomed by Harris – which is reason enough to be a fan, we'd say. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they also turn out a consistently impeccable product, with the classic British botanical scents you'd expect from a genuine genteel apothecary.

Who this is for:

We're not saying you have to be a card-carrying, tea-drinking, Downton-Abbey-watching Anglophile to appreciate D.R. Harris, but we would recommend this brand more for the man who appreciates the finer things in life. If you like everything in your daily routine to carry just the slightest air of propriety, you've got a fondness for tweeds, or you even just happened to think that “Mr. Belvedere” had the right idea, you're likely to develop a soft spot for the array of shaving soaps, hair creams, and aftershaves Harris has to offer.

Who this is not for:

If you can't fathom the idea of ever going near a grooming product labeled “rose” or “lavender,” then D.R. Harris is likely not the line for you. (We do swear, however, that these are the most masculine rose and lavender scents you can imagine.) Outdoorsy types, adventure sportsmen, or guys who like to take an edgier approach to their personal style won't cultivate the proper palate for this ultra-proper British brand. If you're not about a buttoned-up approach to life, then Harris is not likely to find a place on your bathroom countertop.
