Shaving Soap Education

When you think classic shaving, there's nothing more traditional than lathering up with a quality shaving soap. The simplicity is divine and whipping up a lather from a hard soap brings a sense of nostalgia to the morning shave.

Shaving Soaps traditionally come in a hard shaving puck that is similar in size to a hockey puck and similar in consistency to body soap. We carry a wide spectrum of shaving soaps including glycerin based, triple milled soaps, natural soaps, and tallow based soaps. We are proud to carry many small batch handcrafted artisan soaps as well.

Face Lather vs Bowl Lather

Most shaving soaps are made to be placed at the bottom of a shave bowl and to lather directly on the soap puck. The lather is developed in the bowl. A shaving soap stick can be used to face lather. Use the stick to spread some of the soap on your face, and then use the shaving brush to build the lather directly on your face.

How to use a Shaving Soap

  • Soak the shaving brush in warm water and squeeze or flick out the access water. The amount of water may also vary depending on water softness.
  • It is ideal to have a mug or small bowl to hold the soap puck in place.
  • You will lather directly on the surface of the soap in a circular motion until the lather forms.
  • Men will often continue that lather with the brush on the face where even more cream will form.

Expert Tip: Leave the soap container open to dry and be sure to pour out any water sitting at the base of the soap. This will preserve the life of your soap. Always remember to rinse your brush out very well until the water runs clean, squeezing and shaking out any excess water.

Shaving Soaps Reviews
Very Good Shave Soap
Dr. Jon's Natural Vegan Shaving Soap, Flowers in the Dark Vol. 2 Nice scent, you can smell the lavender, its a scent slightly on the "darker" side, but scent projection is not as strong as I would like it to be. I would not call it the greatest scent out there either. But it is a nice scent. The soap has a nice sheen when lathered on the face and performs well.
Autumn glory
Stirling Soap Company Shave Soap, Autumn Glory This soap like all Stirling soaps provides an excellent shave both in volume of lather and slickness the scent is a little hard to discribe. I’ve used other autumn themed soaps and the scent is like no other soap I’ve tried. Excellent performer shave wise though !
Good shaving soap
Catie's Bubbles Shaving Soap, Le Piment de la Vie, 4oz. Great soap, clean fresh shave. Smells great too and the mrs will be happy.
Love this scent
Barrister & Mann Latha Shaving Soap, Taiga I want this scent in everything. Soap, AS, lotion, whatever I can get. It is that good. Soap is great with solid cushion and glide.
Great soap skip the bowl
Haslinger Sage Shaving Soap in Bowl I over the scent of the sage soap, and it lathers like a champ. very much a high quality soap. I was really looking for a small bowl/dish that would be could to throw into my shaving kit for travel, but this isn't it. The bowl is cheap, cracks easily, the lid is not secure, and it is not deep enough. Save a buck, for sure get the soap, but skip the bowl. And if you find a shaving bowl for travel, let me know!
Used these products for years
Col Conk Shaving Soap, Bay Rum Small 2.25 oz Used these products for years and love them. Delivery from WCS was quick and efficient
Greeat Lather, smooth shave!
Stirling Soap Company Shave Soap, Coniferous This is everything I want in a shave soap. The scent is not overbearing - quite nice. The lather is great and doesn't take a long time to load. The shave is smooth and comfortable. I would recommend this one!
Surprisingly good
Dr. Jon's Natural Vegan Shaving Soap, Classic Got this as part of a "Barbershop" soap sample pack from WC. I'd previously tried other Dr. Jon's via samples and wasn't impressed. This one is little thirstier than some soaps and requires a little more effort to lather (bowl) but worth it. Produces a slick cushion that protects the skin. My razor went smoothly across my face (3 passes). Nice feel when done.
