Natural Deodorants: A Grooming Underdog

If you’ve ever smelled a classroom of sophomore boys at the end of an August afternoon. . . if you’ve ever taken a road trip with group of college buddies. . . if you’ve ever wondered what died in your ten-year-old’s skate shoes. . . then you know why God invented deodorant. And since we pride ourselves on giving you everything you need for a good groom, then we can’t neglect to mention this important, rarely lauded product: the hardworking deodorant.

Most of us choose one of two products to swipe under our arms every morning.

Deodorant – this is a substance applied to the body to prevent, remove, or hide unpleasant odors caused by the breakdown of bacteria (particularly under the arms and places where perspiration can gather.)

Antiperspirant – while often used synonymously, antiperspirants differ from deodorants in that they use ingredients (usually aluminum) to block sweat glands from releasing sweat.

While it might sound like a great idea to prevent the source of the odor in the first place (i.e. stop the sweat) there are several concerns where antiperspirants are concerned. By preventing sweating, you are stopping your body from its natural way of releasing toxins. And there is concern that aluminum can build up in your brain and body, which some studies link to cancer.

So, we’d like to feature some excellent, natural deodorant options that we carry, use, and love at WCS.

  • Baxter of California Deodorant, Citrus & Herbal MuskSTAFF PICK! This is a favorite for staff at WCS. Kim said, “Personally love. Great scent, long lasting, keeps me smelling fresh all day long, even through exercise”. Now that’s quite an endorsement. But with its intelligent, science-based, natural formula, it lives up to the hype. Comfrey-root derived allantoin, plum oil, tea tree leaf oil, witch hazel, chamomile, and more provide a natural option at body-odor prevention. And it is particularly good for those with sensitive skin. Of course, the citrus & herbal musk scent is great for men and women alike. That is just what you can expect from a company with over half a century of men’s grooming cred. Their approach is science + nature. As they say, “we may be old school in concept, but we’re high tech in practice.”
  • Speick Deo Stick - Now in its third generation of family ownership, Speick is founded on a philosophy of caring for the whole human. They do that through their amazing products, which harness the harmonizing medicinal properties of the speick (valeriana celtica) plant, as well as their company culture, which provides continued education, childcare, and recreation for employees. Like all Speick products, their deodorant contains extract from the rare, high alpine speick plant. Grown in the Nock Mountains of Austria, this plant has been used for centuries. It grows protected in the Nock Mountains Biopshere Reserve, where families harvest it as they have done for centuries. The Speick plant is known for its calming effect on the central nervous system, while simultaneously stimulating the vegetative nervous system. Perfect for use in mild, skin care products, like this deodorant. This deo contains organic sage and is suitable for vegans. No aluminum, preservatives, mineral oils, gluten or lactose. Just effective, body odor control. And you can combine it with a whole line of Speick-scented products. The performance is great, and so is the price point. You can’t go wrong with Speick.

  • D.R. Harris Arlington Deodorant Stick
    - D.R. Harris never disappoints. With over 200 years of grooming history under their belts, they know quality products. So, when they offer an odor fighting deodorant in the classic Arlington scent, we take note. This D.R. Harris Arlington Deodorant Stick might even be found on a few lists of “best deodorants”. It contains a bacteriostat to destroy the bacteria that cause odor. And it is scented with the Arlington fragrance to give you the confidence of a sophisticated aroma. It isn’t an overpowering scent, just clean, fresh, and light. Notes of citrus are mixed with a hint of fern to give you an every-occasion-all-day essence.

So, if you’re stress-induced sweating at the office or exercise-induced sweating at the gym, take one of these along and be confident – and smell great!

Thanks for sharing! Wish you would have mentioned WCS Alum Stick. I've been using an alum block close to two years and love it! I like that it is odorless so it doesn't compete with my aftershave or cologne. It's also inexpensive, easy to use and works great with nicks/cuts.
