Memorial Day Curation
Our Memorial Day curation recognizes that the "start of summer" holiday weekend isn't just about bbqs and parades, it is also about those who have given themselves in service to our country. So we are highlighting the values shown of endurance, courage, accomplishment as well as the main street ideals they died defending.
Soap Commander Shaving Soap, Endurance:
Endurance: “The fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way”. Such a trait embodies much of Soap Commander (and Navy veteran) Darren’s time in duty. This value - and many others - has been ingrained into his daily life and, as such, is reflected in his and his wife’s outstanding line of men’s grooming products. Endurance is a quality vegan shaving soap at a great price, with notes of nutmeg, orange, star anise, aldehydes, carnation, jasmine, geranium, cinnamon, heliotrope, pimento, ambergris, benzoin, cedar, vanilla, tonka bean and musk for a classic reminder of the old school aftershave and cologne that bedecked the shelves of our fathers and their fathers.
Captain’s Choice Aftershave, Bay Rum:
Scott, owner of Captain’s Choice, is an avid supporter and contributor to MSHV, the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, a non-profit supporting at-risk veterans and their families. Scott’s Bay Rum aftershave is an infamous post shave, and one which - if I may say so boldly - will become one of the most popular aftershaves of the past decade or so. A product that’ll have future generations saying, “Oh yeah, my granddad used that stuff all the time!”. Their classic bay rum carries the reigns for the ever-nostalgic notes of this traditional scent, with citrus, cinnamon, and West Indies Bay creating an island-dwelling, relaxing, earthy and spicy olfaction that makes for the perfect complement for the coming hot days of summer.
Reef Point Soapworks Shaving Soap, Classic Barbershop:
Reef Point Soapworks seems to be put on the backburner with so many artisanal offerings coming to the table as of late. However, I think this is quite the ill-fated move; owner and operator Eric creates an incredibly, incredibly slick soap in an array of well-rounded scents, one of which being his Classic Barbershop. Arguably my favorite Barbershop in the very large sea of this scent family, this scent takes the slightly powdery, oaky and floral barbershop and gives it a very subtle, yet admiral, inclusion of orange peel for a more crisp take to this olfactory choice. What’s more, Eric is a veteran in the Armed Forces and, like Darren of Soap Commander, incorporates this experience into this hobby and part-time profession.
Stirling Soap Company Shaving Soap, Sharp Dressed Man:
If you’ve been in the wet shaving game for some time now, chances are you’ve come across the famed Stirling shaving soaps many times. If you’re not familiar, here’s a concise overview: Stirling is an Alabama-based men’s grooming company that makes some of the highest quality soaps at an incredibly affordable price. Of their vast array of scents, Sharp Dressed Man is oft reached for -- being an accurate dub of the popular Green Irish Tweed by the family-owned Creed fragrance house. Notes of lemon, Indian verbena, peppermint, violet leaf, Florentine iris, sandalwood, and ambergris.
Soap Commander Shaving Soap, Courage:
While I try to give as much a selection as possible, I just couldn’t help but bring this artisan back for round two. Courage is a clean, masculine and woody blend of Japanese grapefruit, bergamot, lemon, peppercorn, ginger, jasmine, aquatic notes, patchouli, cedar, vetiver, labdanum and frankincense. What’s more, this scent embodies a trait that must be found in our Armed Forces. Memorial Day found its roots in the grim wake of the Civil War, our country’s most deadly war. This war, and so many others, call for the courage of over one million men and women working to protect our nation. I keep this soap as a morning reminder when I’ve got a tough day ahead; to have courage, faith, and a positive outlook as much as possible.
Oleo Soapworks Shaving Soap, Melonade:
Oleo Soapworks has been pushing the boundaries of the “value” shaving soap. While this isn’t the cheapest soap out in the market, it certainly blows similar soaps at significantly higher price points out of the water. Duck fat provides some of the slickest shaves one could ever hope for, and a post shave that’ll leave your skin nourished and protected until your next shave. Melonade is a bit of a nod toward the large bowl of punch likely to be found in (us desert dwellers’) Memorial Day parties out in the sun. Melonade is a crisp, clean and simple scent of fresh, natural watermelon and refreshing lemon. Also, this’ll make a great addition to your den during the sweltering hot months of summer!
