Veteran's Day: An Interview with Mickey Lee Soapworks!
Veteran's Day is not just about cooking up some steaks or burgers on the barbecue. It's a time of humble remembrance, thanks, and recognition of our veterans' duty to serve and protect our country. No matter what duty, no matter how much recognition or what the cost, we thank those who have sacrificed much for the safety of our country. We decided to ask a few questions of one of our favorite artisans and member of the Armed Forces, Mickey Lee Soapworks, to get some background on their introduction into wet shaving, and lessons they’ve taken away from their service. Read on!
Which branch of the armed forces were you in?
Currently still active duty in the US Navy.
When did you begin serving?
Where are you stationed?
I’m currently stationed in San Diego, CA aboard the USS Pearl Harbor, currently deployed.
What is the most important life lesson that you've taken away from your service?
To be able to step up and take charge, whether it's your job or not. And to always be ready to drop everything and go, military involves a lot of last minute changes, you have to be adaptable.
What is something that the armed services taught you that you think more people should learn?
What does Veterans Day look like in your household?
Honestly, the same as any day. We live proudly representing and honoring the military and those that have served every day.
How did you get into wet shaving?
I really got my first exposure to wet shaving when I was on my first deployment. There was a sailor on my carrier that would wake up early every morning so he had some time to use a straight razor to shave. Didn't always go so smoothly for him during rougher seas, but it definitely piqued my interest. I ordered my first starter kit while we were stationed in Bahrain. And the rest they say is history.
Here at West Coast Shaving, we appreciate our fellow artisans who really help to make our community a community. In every aspect, Samantha and Eric of MLS work hard to not only supply us with products, but to do their part in serving and protecting our nation and being forthright and honest in their conduct. Any time spent in the plethora of wet shaving forums would verify their dedication and love for this community. To them, and to all of our Veterans, we thank you for your service and wish you all the best!
