Your Complete Guide to Merkur Safety Razors

If you spend any time at all on our website, you will discover that many of our bestselling safety razors bear the Merkur name. That's because Merkur is synonymous with great tools. From its inception in 1896 to today, Merkur has served their customers with quality and distinction. When Emil Hermes went to register his new blade company, he found the name "Hermes" already taken. So, he took as his brand “Merkur”, the Roman equivalent of the messenger of the gods, Hermes. And clearly the word got around. Today the winged messenger logo graces their high-quality grooming utensils used the world over.

I have three Merkur razors (15C, 34C, and 37C), due to trying to find the right one for my beard. I have a very strong, somewhat wiry, not particularly thick or dense, beard hair. I’ve been using Reef Point and Mitchell’s soaps and Feather blades (bc they cut my beard hair without tugging). And with all that, and mapping my beard, I have not been able to shake ingrown hairs. On a tip by a fellow safety-shaver, I switched back to Mach3 cartridges, kept the soaps and technique, and have not gotten ingrown hairs since…. What am I doing wrong? I like these razors so much more than cartridges, but given about a year of trying, had more ingrown hairs than ever before. Is it the blades? My technique is 2-3 passes; First, with grain; Second, 45 degrees off grain, then 45 degrees opposite grain. Why are the awful Mach3’s that feel like I’m raking my face not giving me ingrowns, but all Merkur’s + Feathers giving me ingrowns? Any advice / tips would be greatly appreciated. My favorite Merkur is the 15C due to my tendency to grow the beard out for 3-4 days, then wet shave. The 15C + Feathers was tug-free, and looks great for the first 36 hours…. then the ingrowns make me look like a teenager for two weeks. Help!
