What is after shave used for?

An after shave (or any post-shave product) can serve a number of purposes. Splashes can be used for their astringent and antiseptic properties which tones your skin and combats rash and infections. In addition, most of these products contain hydrating, soothing, and nourishing ingredients as well so your skin is left feeling refreshed, moisturized, and soft.

Can I use aftershave everyday?

Absolutely! Aftershaves are formulated to be used after every shave, so if you are a daily shaver then you can definitely apply an aftershave following every bout with the blade. If you find that an alcohol-based splash is too drying, you can combine it with a balm or alternate between a balm and a splash. There are so many options!

What is the difference between aftershave splash and aftershave balm?

Aftershave splashes and aftershave balms are probably the most common post-shave products (although there are also alum sticks, milks, skin food, etc). While this isn’t a hard and fast rule, there are three general differences between splashes and balms: composition, consistency, color.

Aftershave splashes are often alcohol or witch hazel based recipes of a thin consistency and clear color. Their focus is toning and cleansing. Aftershave balms are often non-alcohol based concoctions of a thick/lotion/gel consistency and milky in color (although many are clear as well). Their focus is soothing and hydrating.

What is after shave lotion?

While most of our products at West Coast Shaving are labeled as splashes or balms, you might see some products referred to as after shave “lotions”. This is a term from the UK and parts of Europe. Old World manufacturers will sometimes refer to their clear, thin post shave product as a lotion, while it is something that Americans would identify as a splash.

Is after shave bad if I have sensitive skin?

No, not necessarily. You just need to make sure that you are picking the right product for your needs. If you find that alcohol-based or department store brands are leaving you irritated, then you should probably consider an after shave product more soothing and natural. While alcohol-based splashes are wonderful for toning and cleansing, they can also be drying and irritating to some shavers. Choosing an after shave balm may be more your speed as it will soothe and nourish your skin. Just make sure that you are aware of the ingredient list and possible irritants.
