Muhle R41 GRANDE Double Edge Safety Razor

21 reviews

The Muhle R41 GRANDE Double Edge Safety Razor is the pinnacle of shaving; and for those who have been on the hunt for a great option for their next wet shaving razor, it could be just what they need. It could also be a great first option for those who are making the transition from electronics or disposables to the old school blades.

Getting a good shave is not always easy unless you are using the right tools. Disposables are certainly not the right tools. Even though you can replace the blades in these safety models, those blades are of a much higher quality than those little yellow ones that don't do much more than irritate your face. This model comes with a single blade, as well as a short set of instructions.

What is it that makes this model different from the others in Muhle's line? The GRANDE actually has a longer and a wider handle than the other model, the regular R41. This also will fit the RHM SR Safety Razor Stand. The look and the basic design are the same though. Both work very well. It just depends on whether you want the larger option you see here. The R41 is also the open comb line; whereas, the R89 is the closed comb line.

Length: 4.2 inches

Weight: 89 grams

Made in Germany.

Big handle, Probably best for large surfaces like head

This is a big razor. I like longer and heavier handles as I find long handles easier to control than short handles, and I find weight to be helpful for retaining contact between the blade and my skin. But this handle is both long and large in diameter, which makes it a bit unwieldy for shaving my face. It might be better suited for large surface areas, such as shaving the head. Nonetheless, it seems well made and sturdy. The texturing on the handle provides for good grip.

After 15 years of jobs requiring I be clean shaven everyday, I had become dissatisfied with cartridge razor and electrics. I’ve dabbled in straights and shavettes, and tried a few other DE razors. Now, I’m done. This is what I’ve been looking for. Yes, it is “aggressive”, and you will feel this razor on your skin. I absolutely recommend a quality blade. I prefer a Feather. It’s hefty, so you need little to no pressure. Aesthetically, it’s a fine looking tool. If I had any complaint, it would be the knurling. There is very little grip. Don’t be scared of this razor, I use it daily and I am very impressed with the close shaves I get. Of course, YMMV.

Closest shave. Requires care.

I worked my way up to this bad boy. I have sort of a strange shaving routine. I do the first pass with the mercury 34c and a feather blade. When I used the Muhle first I was getting some unpleasant tugging and I already had the merkur. For the second pass and touch up I use the muhle with a persona blade. This guy will give you as close a shave as you could off. If anything I have to be careful to not shave too close on my neck to avoid bad razor burn. The trick with this guy is to barely hold on to the handle and let the razor glide. Beware those who like to scrape!! You will pay for your hubris!! As to value, this guy is high performance but you pay for it. It's sort of for the shaving hobbyist. The merkur 37c will give a very good shave and is cheaper.

Refined aggressiveness

This razor gets a lot of press for being very aggressive. It is true, that I would not recommend this razor to an inexperienced shaver. This razor demands that you respect the angle in which you were cutting, but it also gives the closest shave that I've ever had. The razor is quite beautiful, and all the details are well taken care of. The name of the game with this razor is to take it slow and in sure that you have very sharp blades (I mean, ensure they've not started to wear down at all). The razor is a once a week one for me, it quite literally makes my face hairless and the next day there is not enough to shave. All of this in a very refined shaving experience.
