Grooming Dept Moisturizing Pre-Shave, Unscented & Coolant

  • Innovative pre-shave with synthetic coolant agents
  • Loaded with moisturizing goodness
  • Easy application

This Northern California artisan, Mohammad, started Grooming Dept in 2017. With formulations that include duck fat, donkey milk, and lamb & beef tallow, as well as a vegan base, he is turning heads. Now check out his preshave product as well.

This extremely moisturizing product will prep your face and whiskers for the blade. Wet your face & hands and wipe over your face, leaving your skin damp but not wet. Then apply a bead of preshave on your beard and neck. Rub in a circular motion of about a minute. You may add a few drops of water at a time but make sure that the product doesn't being to bubble. You are trying to create a film on your face. Now you are ready to shave as normal. If you do multiple passes, simply lightly splash your face with water rather than completely removing soap residue. Any preshave left behind will be absorbed by your skin, you don't want to strip it away.

This unscented version is perfect for a preshave. It can lay a base on which to build many other fragrances. So, feel free to pick your favorite soap or splash. This one won't conflict.

Cheap, effective pre-shave

Comes in a good-sized 70mm x 63mm cylinder container. According to the instructions on the web site, you only need to use around an almond sized portion from the finger to apply to your whole face. I use around portions per shave, but there's so much in the container relative to how much I use, that I can see this lasting 20-30 shaves easily. The cooling effect isn't too strong for me but that could be a good thing for other people, depending on your sensitivity and preferences. If I follow the instructions then wash off the pre-shave without shaving, I'm left with a pretty soft moist face (as long as I use warm/hot water during the process). All in all I think this a good product to help soften up the face and hair that should last for a long time on your shelf

Good stuff

Nice change from preshave oils. I don’t notice much difference with my elite soaps, but it makes my second tier soaps perform like the elites. It’s kind of fun to lather this up.

Way more than a placebo effect

I use pre-shaves often. It never detracts from the shave and maybe helps a little. At least, that was my experience until trying this product. WHOA! I used this and then shaved with Wholly Kaw's valentine scent. It was literally one of my best shaves in memory. I saw Mantic59 recently reviewed Grooming Dept. preshave on his blog and pretty much said the same thing. It's well beyond a placebo and makes a real difference. Almost bought a second ... except it's now sold out.
