Description from the Vendor

So, what’s different about the Highland Spring story? Rather than being an enthusiast who turned her hobby into a living, Mary instead re-tuned her professional training into a passion. A qualified chemist, Mary now brings her expertise to creating beneficial blends of healthy, handmade soap and personal care products. It’s not about looking for a nice fragrance - everything Mary creates, from base oils, focuses on what she knows gives the most benefit to the skin, and to the body.

Tallow, the Holy Grail of the wet shaving community.

We decided quite some time ago that we would try our hand at crafting a tallow soap base and have been working on it ever since. To truly call this base our own we started by rendering our own beef tallow to create this luxurious new soap base.

Eclipse was born from a desire to create a dark musky fragrance, although at the time, we had no idea it would bear that moniker. We have collaborated with Australian private reserve as they are well-known in creating complex scents; a perfect fit.

The long list of notes come together beautifully to create a truly one of a kind experience. Russian leather and dark musk are predominant initially, followed by blond tobacco dried fig and bourbon then rounding out with floral notes of Carnation, Geranium and Lavender.

The dry down on this scent emphasizes it's complexity, like the moon slowly passing in front of the sun, it darkens over time, leaving you in the shadows of Eclipse.

This is a one-time scent release that won't be returning.

Worst scent ever

If you like the smell of a hospital antibacterial floor cleaner then you will love Eclipse. Used it once and honestly it’s going in the trash. Too bad I bought the balm as well.

Approaching Perfection

The Good -- This scent is as complex and immediately captivating as anything Australian Private Reserve has done (and that's high praise indeed). I don't pick up many of the floral and fruit notes in the description. Instead, this is tarry, medicinal and leathery -- 1/3 your first baseball glove, 1/3 the iodine disinfectant on a childhood scrape, and 1/3 your grandad's leather toiletry kit from the army. It's evocative and nostalgic and quite far from classic (sweet) leather fragrances like Knize 10. The performance of the soap is elite with a nice balance of glide and cushion -- like driving a great sportscar, you can feel the road but are in complete control. Post shave feel is excellent. The Bad -- This is entirely subjective so doesn't impact my score, but I prefer hard soaps, as I'm much better at dialing them in. Highland Springs is as close to a cream as I ever hope to get. I mean, it's really, really soft. The Magnificent -- This is a real THING with me, but I live in a small, inner city apartment, and my bathroom storage is limited (and I have an extremely understanding partner). This soap comes in a compact tub that's the correct size for is contents. So I'm not buying -- or storing -- empty space. (If I need "room to load the brush," I'll use a dang shaving bowl!) All other things being equal, I am a jillion times more likely to buy Highland Springs again because of this.
