  • Lathering Shaving Soap
  • With Duck Fat base
  • Scented with cardamom, bergamot, lavender, cedarwood, amber, coumarin, vetiver

West Coast Shaving is pleased to carry this amazing line of shaving soaps, balms, and splashes with a wide variety of scents – right from the heartland of the USA. Vida Perez-Velazquez is the founder (and hands) of the handmade, small batch grooming requisites coming out of Oleo.  Like many in the wet shaving world, Vida was inspired to try her hand at soap-making because of persistent skin issues that were only exacerbated by commercial soaps and moisturizers. In addition to a fabulous performance, her products have a plethora of scents!

But the performance is top-notch. The Canard base shaving soap is a duck fat grooming requisite. And boy, does it deliver. Loaded with skin nourishing kokum butter, palm oil, castor oil, jojoba oil (hence the name Oleo - oil), this soap is slick and protective. The duck fat too gives it a dense, rich lather. It is a thirsty soap, so don't be afraid of a little water. This hot process soap is poured into a low profile, wide mouth container for easy brush loading.

This masculine aroma takes inspiration from La Nuit de l'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent. It is a complex, spicy fragrance kept from being too dark by the freshness of bergamot, lavender, and cedar even with the explosive spicy cardamom. The coumarin and vetiver in the base provides an elegant close.

Nice performance

I bought when it was on sale so for me, it was a great value. The performance for me is outstanding. Oleo soaps for me, has great cushion, thick lather, and slickness. I know some feel like the slickness or performance is not elite. For me, it is. I really like the scent. It is clean but not overpowering. I noticed that some Oleo soaps are more subdued as far as the scent. I do not give ratings on scents since they are so subjective but on performance only.

I took a chance...

Having picked up this soap on Black Friday, I wanted to use it for a few months before posting any review. I've been using Proraso & co bigelow for years but I wanted to explore some artisan offerings. The first thing I noticed is that this soap is indeed very thirsty compared to what I've been using. My prep has been: bloom soap and soak brush during my shower, use bloom water as "pre-shave" and wring out brush of excess water, load for 15-20 seconds, and whip up a lather in a bowl. I have tried face lathering a few times but I find the bowl yields a more consistent product (I believe due to the thirsty nature of it.) The slickness is decent, cushion is very good. I do dip the rush in a little water for 2nd and 3rd, but I find two is usually enough. I pair it with the excursion splash and find the post shave to be very nice a few hours later, with no dryness or redness. Sent is wonderful but not overpowering. Doesn't stick around too long, which I like. Sent is reminiscent of a traditional "musk" sent...I dig it.
