Barrister and Mann is an artisan soap maker making waves with their fascinating scents and fabulous lather. Like many who got their start in soap making, this artisan wanted to battle sensitive skin and run-of-the-mill scents. Will did that in spades. His tallow-soap is a dream come true.

Like all Barrister and Mann shaving soaps, this Omnibus base whips up a creamy, dreamy, dense, protective lather. Not content to rest on his laurels, Will has continued to innovate and this formula was worth waiting for. It is loaded with skin-nurturing ingredients to bring you an exceptional shave but it is lanolin-free. Whether you lather by face or by mug, this tallow-based shaving soap will give you fabulous protection, lubrication, and post-shave effects.

  • Bay Rum: Traditional, spicy aroma of blackstrap rum, Indie bay, sweet orange, cinnamon, and vanilla-like benzoin. No clove in this one.
  • Cheshire: One of Will's favorite scents is an attempt to bring your favorite cuppa to your wet shave. Notes of sage, bergamot, and hints of lavender and patchouli are a pretty spot-on replica of Earl Grey tea.
  • Cologne Russe: This warm, but accessible scent was inspired by an ages-old perfume first created for the Russian royal family. Notes of lemon, bergamot, petitgrain, and herbs move into a dry down of violet, rose, bay, vanilla, and amber.
  • Lavanille: The heart of this scent is a labor of love, Mousse de Saxe. This dark, leathery scent was lost to the mists of time until Will recreated it. For this fragrance, he blends it with lavender, vanilla, cedar, and musk for a noteworthy aroma.
  • Le Grand Chypre: Inspired by the island of Cyprus and the perfume classification that bears its name, this Chypre scent has the traditional notes of bergamot, lime, labdanum, oakmoss, patchouli, but then Will has added depth with peach, rose, frankincense, cedar, and cinnamon.
  • Seville: There are many barbershops on the market, but Will's fans have dubbed this one "God's Barbershop" and we have a hard time keeping it on the shelf. Notes of lemon, bergamot, rosemary, lavender, patchouli and oakmoss give a nod to the "Barber of Seville".

Reel protection

This is my first "tallow" shaving soap and I noticed how the protection and the lather has more body, more protection. I am sold.

Superb Soap!

I am reviewing the Cologne Russe scent with the Omnibus base. Functionally this is an excellent soap. I've stuck with Proraso and Cella for most of my shaving life. I've tried a couple oddball options and samples but was never convinced to convert from my mainstays. This soap could very well do the trick though. It's a bit thirstier than others I've used but not unintuitively so. For the first time with it, I used my standard very well-used old EJ Best Badger brush with hard midwestern American tapwater and was able to build a spectacular lather in short order. I soaked the brush, gave it a good shake, loaded the brush on the puck with 20-30 swirls, then started building in my shaving bowl. I had pretty good lather almost instantly but added a bit of water twice to get it great. Got an excellent shave out of it. It really seems to build a good layer on the skin and really get in there. My skin felt more moisturized and protected during the shave than with the soaps I'm used to. I'm not great at describing scents but it is a very nice one. Warm, elegant, and quite complex. It smells natural; no off notes or exaggerated synthetic smells.

West Coast Shaving's Creams Are Better in Every Way

...except in two ways: 1. Cool name Barrister & Mann and great packaging Ok, one way: 'marketing' I admit, the frustration I encountered getting this soap to perform could be a factor of the aged brush I've been using or even the ceramic scuttle I use... hey, or even the ~110° F water I use to heat the scuttle could be a factor. But, of all the other full and samples of products I have used, 22 in all, none (read: ZERO) have came close to the frustration of getting this (and 'Le Grand Chypre', too) soap to give up a lather. Even if it's all because of me: the fragrance, nor the performance in the cut, didn't even come close to making the effort worth it. Hard pass on their unnecessarily hard soaps.

I would buy again: Le Grand Chypre

I have enjoyed every Barrister and Mann soap I have bought. What it boils down to is the scent and my personal preference. I bought Dickens Revisited on a whim, and I really don’t enjoy shaving with cookies and cherries. Makes a **** of a lather, but I gag throughout the shave. My favorite two scents from Barrister are Seville and 42. So let’s talk about Le Grand Chypre. I found this to be a pleasant scent, and an easy lather maker. While this won’t supplant my top two Barrister and Mann soaps, I would consider buying it again.
