Barrister and Mann is an artisan soap maker making waves with their fascinating scents and fabulous lather. Like many who got their start in soap making, this artisan wanted to battle sensitive skin and run-of-the-mill scents. Will did that in spades. His tallow-soap is a dream come true. Try Barrister and Mann Shaving Soap, Beaudelaire.

Introducing Barrister and Mann's new Excelsior soap base. This is a company that never rests on its laurels (although they can claim more than most). They have continued to innovate and improve. Now, in addition to white/black label, Reserve, and Glissant, you can enjoy Excelsior. This tallow-base is a significant upgrade from the Glissant base, says Will. It hits the best of all the bases. It lathers similar to Reserve, lasts longer than Glissant and is less finicky about water. This base DOES contain lanolin, so those with sensitivities should be aware.

Beaudelaire is Barrister and Mann's much-loved (and recently re-released) fragrance that marries light and dark, sweet and bitter, clean and dirty, nice and naughty. It starts with the classic fougere accord known for its notes of lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin which give it a green, clean, fresh appeal. Then it is blended with Barrister and Mann's own recreation of Mousse de Saxe, a unique, richly bitter aroma of dusky, leathery, decadent charm. Along with ylang, ylang, rose, and sandalwood, this aroma is dark, soapy, and irresistible.  Like the controversial poet, Charles Beaudelaire, this scent symbolizes elegance and debauchery, sweetness and sin.

Unconventional Perfection

I love the story of Barrister and Mann's resuscitation of Mousse de Saxe, and the resultant base adds dimension to a number of Will's scents. I bought the original version of Beaudelaire and, after being initially underwhelmed (I thought it smelled a lot like Brut up front), was mesmerized by the way it unfolded, with the dirty, chalky Mousse de Saxe slowly swimming to the surface. Like a great jazz version of a classic tune, it was immediately familiar and stunningly original at the same time. In this West Coast Shaving version, the Mousse de Saxe is a bit closer to the top making it sexy first and fresh afterwards, instead of the other way around. It's still one of my favourite scents -- now possible even moreso. As for the performance, there is nothing in the artisan soap world that can compare to B&M's Excelsior base, so slick, protective and easy to lather that it almost feels like cheating. There has been a shift in the shave world towards soft, croap-style bases and I appreciate the harder formulation of Excelsior. It tells me this tub is going to last a good long time.

My new favorite

I’ve found that Barrister and Mann make the best overall shave. Purchased Seville first and found that my razor glided so nice with no irritation. It leaves your face feeling so smooth. Might be more expensive than other brands but the shave experience is worth it.

BEWARE!

I tried this soap one time and threw it out. Smells terrible and really stays with you. Had to take a shower to get the smell out of my beard.

Earthy Goodness

I haven’t used this soap yet but the scent is pleasing; better than Hallows.

Non-mainstream scent but very good and great performance

When I smelled Beaudelaire, I knew I'd smelled another soap sort of like it before, but I couldn't place it. It's a complex scent that challenges the notions of many of today's scents, but it is actually kind of intoxicating in a warm, musky, vegetal way. And the performance as usual is excellent. The Excelsior base seems to be very easy to dial in. This won't be for everybody, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
